You see structures like this everywhere in Marfa. Literally everywhere.

The bricks beneath the cracked veneer are exposed.

These buildings speak to me.

I am the veneer at times clinging to this ageless soul of mine. The ego, the fear, the “what will they think?”

But as I age, as do these houses, that veneer cracks and weathers and crumbles to the ground in front of me.

And my bones, my heart, my soul get to live unencumbered again, like I did when I was a child.

“What matters is discovering myself under the veneer, under the layers that are wrapped around me. There are two ‘yous’; there’s ‘you’, the real you, and then there’s the image.”
