Rooster Rage

There are a lot of roosters in Marfa. Every morning, about an hour or so before sunrise they begin.

This morning, while enjoying my coffee, with all the dogs literally draped across my lap, I am listening…really listening…to their songs.

And I’ve gotta say, they sound so strained…so effortful…kind of like it’s maxing out their vocal cords.

I decided to find out what all that cawing was about and I learned that it’s not really about celebrating the sunrise…it’s about claiming their territory…staking out their space…reminding the other roosters to stay the hell out.

Reminds me of some politicians.

I don’t know whether this is funny or sad…I just know that I’d rather celebrate the sunrise.

And so I will.

Good morning friends.
